On October 20, 2011, we reported that The Cario Middle School Student Council started a food drive. Their drive has inspired the school to take it up a notch (actually to take it all the way up). Each homeroom at the school has started their own food drive – that's 52 Drives! – 52 teachers, about 1400 students and the rest of the school's staff all pulling together, in a friendly competition, to see which homeroom can help out the most. To find the drive you want to support – search with the homeroom teacher's last name. Or search using "East Cooper" to get a list of all of the drives that support the East Cooper Community Outreach in Mount Pleasant, SC.
Just Like the Mailman
Neither rain, nor hail, nor sleet, nor snow stops some people from helping others. While YouGiveGoods' offices lost power due to the freak October snowstorm (we're pretty sure we had over 10 inches of the white stuff here in NJ), 5th graders Sean O'Hara and Michael Dinato started their Food Drive on Saturday and it's off to a great start – check out In His Footsteps.
On the Road Again!
We're very happy to report that you can now see YouGiveGoods on the road. If you see us out there – give a honk!!

Our first animal shelter drive just ended. Thanks to Marie Maxwell, Common Sense for Animals (NJ) will be receiving over 50 cases of pet food and other needed supplies. Marie has never organized a drive before, so her "rookie" effort is amazing! Way to go!
A few more "firsts" to report-our first soup kitchen drive and our first drive in Pennsylvania! A big shout-out to the terrific Morristown eatery-the Famished Frog-for starting YouGiveGoods's first soup kitchen drive to help out the Community Soup Kitchen-check out www.YouGiveGoods.com/TheFrogFightsHunger. And to see our first PA drive, go to www.YouGiveGoods.com/VeteransHolidayGiftBasket-a huge shout out to Emily Tomasi and her sisters for working to help veterans this holiday season.
The first drive on YouGiveGoods has ended! Thanks to 12 year old Jamie Osman. As part of her Bat Mitzvah community service project, Jamie set up a food drive to help the Somerset Food Bank of Somerset, NJ. Her goal was to generate $360 worth of food contributions! Well, she did that, and more. Her drive ended with $462 of contributed food. Only one word for that - WOW!
One Month Since Our Launch...
Wow! Our first month has been great!!
We have 25 drives up and running - supporting food pantries, animal shelters and soup kitchens in 5 different states. These drives have been set up by young people, adults, businesses, schools and service organizations.
We couldn't be more thrilled that all these people and organizations are utilizing YouGiveGoods to get good things done and to help those in need. We also just got written up in a terrific parenting blog - A Child Grows - check it out!
Five States and counting!
Every journey starts with a first step. Our first step took place in New Jersey, where our company is based. When we launched, the first drives started were designed to help food pantries and animal shelters in the Garden State. Since then, we've added drives to benefit places in other states - New York, South Carolina, Michigan and New Hampshire - so we are up to five. We look forward to adding drives that help out in the rest of the country, one state at a time.
No Soup for You!
On the contrary, unlike the Soup Nazi of Seinfeld fame, we have just added a new type of drive to our website - a Soup Kitchen Drive - designed to help make sure people get the soup they need.
Businesses Embrace YouGiveGoods!
Think globally, act locally! We're happy to report a set of food drives started by local businesses to support food pantries in their communities.
Thanks to Rago Brothers and to Niko's Hair Studio - both have set up drives to help the Interfaith Food Pantry. Thanks, also, to the Hoagie Hut for their support of the Food Bank of Somerset County. Each of these businesses has not only started a drive to help out, but they are all offering a "special way" of thanking those that contribute to their drives - very creative and all good.
They're not "kids", they are young people doing terrific things. We now have "kids" at college, in high school, and in middle school using our website to run their drives.
Check out Joshua Clarke's ROTC drive to help Hurricane Irene victims. Or how about Jordan Klotz, a star high school hockey player, who has fit into his busy school/athletic schedule a food drive to help the Interfaith Food Pantry in Morristown, NJ.
And then there's Jamie Osman who has set up a food drive as part of her Bat Mitzvah project.
Parents hope to set a good example for their kids to follow. These are a set of "kids" whose example we should all want to follow!
The Rest of the Story...
In our first post to this page on "Launch Day" - there was a quick blurb about the "Joplin Drive" and a quirky reference to "a camera, a Cook, a TV station and the Stay Puff marshmallow man." Here's the rest of the story... The picture above is an actual photograph taken by Scott Cook. It depicts storm clouds broiling over Kansas City that soon after spawned the now infamous Joplin Tornado. To find out how Scott turned this photograph into 250 cases of food that was delivered to Forest Park First Baptist Church food pantry, watch the video on this link - http://www.nbcactionnews.com/dpp/news/local_news/kc-storm-cloud-photo-goes-viral - great display of the power of the internet and Part 1 of the "rest of the story." Part 2 is where YouGiveGoods comes in. With the money Scott raised, he teamed up with the United Aid Foundation to engage us to turn the money into real goods - 250 cases of real food purchased from us and delivery by us on behalf of Scott and UAF.
What's cool is that you can imagine how many hands it takes to get 250 cases of food delivered anywhere, yet the only finger Scott lifted was the one to press the trigger on his camera - the same one he used to press the "send" button on the email that started a series of viral events that ended with a lot of people who needed help getting it.
One week since launch!
Wow! Things are still working well and we've got over 15 drives up and running! We're still busy tweaking things at the site (this is probably a forever thing). And we launched on Facebook - look for Facebook/YouGiveGoods. All terrific news! Unfortunately, the government just reported that 1 in 6 Americans now live in poverty - over 46 Million people struggling with the basics - so there's a lot of work to do.
We finally have some photos from the Tornado Relief Drive we supported over the summer (before we launched - but that's a long story) - we delivered over 200 cases of food to the Greater Birmingham Ministries on behalf of the United Aid Foundation. Here are the shots...
We're off to a great start!
Our website seems to be working well - far from perfect at the moment - but we've already gotten a lot of really nice feedback. We've also had people come to the site to start up four different food drives and one animal shelter drive! Thanks to those of you for helping us to get the ball rolling.
Today is the day...launch day. If you're reading this first post, we hope your visit will be the first of many to come. A little over a year ago, a couple of us had some dinner table discussion about the times we are living in and about how much help was needed. It seemed to us that no-one seemed to be using technology in a way that would really leverage people's desire to help. We decided to see if we could do something about that - and our answer is YouGiveGoods. We've spent the last year developing a platform that makes it easy to organize and participate in "hard goods" charitable drives - the kind that people contribute tangible goods to, not money. I won't repeat what's in our "About" or "How It Works" sections - but we've tried to use technology to make these types of drives easier to set up and more enjoyable to participate in. Our hope is that by doing these things people will be able to provide more help to those in need - and we're clearly in an environment where things are getting worse, not better.
As with any technology launch, we're a little nervous about how things will go. We hope that you will have a great experience at YouGiveGoods and that you'll think of it as a place to go to when you want to help others - to organize your drive or to contribute to someone else's.
We also hope that you'll let us know what works well and what doesn't - including any suggestions you have to make things better (we already have quite a list ourselves - so look for some changes in the near future). Of special note are two drives our platform supported over the summer - one for the tornado victims in Birmingham, Alabama and one for the tornado relief effort in Joplin, Missouri. In both cases, we supported the United Aid Foundation and delivered over 200 cases of food to the Greater Birmingham Ministries and the Forest Park Baptist Church in Joplin.
The Joplin drive deserves a whole page in itself - a great story on the internet's power - suffice it say it involves a camera, a Cook, a TV station and the Stay Puft marshmallow man - we'll be posting more information about that soon.
