A key program in support of United Way of Hunterdon County’s (UWHC) health initiative, the Hunterdon Diaper Bank (HDB) is run in conjunction with NORWESCAP Food Bank to raise awareness about diaper need and to help address that need in Hunterdon County.
We are asking individuals, companies, and organizations to participate by either donating infant or adult diapers or providing UWHC with a monetary donation to support the Hunterdon Diaper Bank (HDB). Donations will be accepted through December 31, 2015. UWHC’s Holiday Hands Program will be running next month and some of our clients include diapers on their wish lists. Perhaps you would consider making a donation that could make such a simple wish be fulfilled! To shop online just click on the SHOP NOW button and the items you purchase will be delivered directly to us and there is no cost for shipping.
Did you know it costs an average of $1,200 for a year’s supply of infant diapers? Another critical impact is a mother’s ability to carry on with necessary daily activities. Four in ten mothers struggling with diaper need have missed work or school, stayed at home when they needed to go out, or kept their babies out of daycare because they did not have enough diapers. These mothers say they need an additional 14 or more diapers per week to feel as though they have enough for their babies.
Adult incontinence products cost $1,200 per year as well. Because they can’t afford incontinence products, many incontinent but otherwise healthy adults stop leaving the house for fear of having an accident, a common cause of folks becoming “shut-ins.” Conversely, for those folks who do become seriously ill late in life, the portion of their care that isn’t covered by Medicare and other insurance--like incontinence products--often means a catastrophic depletion of their life savings, no matter how well they planned for their retirement. And unlike most babies, who will someday grow out of diapers, incontinent adults will generally bear this cost for the rest of their lives.
